Best time to visit the Arènes d’Arles: by season, by hour, and the days to avoid

Come at nine in the morning between mid-April and June, or in late September and October, on any day that is not a feria or spectacle day. The building is open all year, but summer midday is hot and crowded, the two winter months run short hours, and on feria weekends the monument shuts to sightseers altogether. The 2026 dates that matter are 3 to 6 April, 6 July and 11 to 13 September; the hours page has the full table.

By season

March to June is the good stretch: hours run to 18:00 and then 19:00, and the town is busy without being full. July and August are the hottest months and the tiers have no shade; the monument stays open until 19:00, so use the evening. The Rencontres photography festival opens in the same week as the Cocarde d’Or, so the first week of July is the one I would skip. September is fine again except for the Feria du Riz weekend. From 2 November to the end of February the hours shrink to 10:30 to 16:30, last entry 16:00, but you will have the place nearly to yourself.

By hour

Be at the door at nine, or come in the last hour before closing, which in summer is also the cool one. Midday in July and August is the worst. A visit takes 45 to 60 minutes, ninety if you climb the tower.

The days to avoid, and the days to choose

Feria de Pâques, Friday 3 to Monday 6 April 2026: closed to visitors for four days, hotels full, nine bodegas in the streets. Cocarde d’Or, Monday 6 July: closed. Feria du Riz, 11 to 13 September: closed again, and summer concert days too. If you want the bulls, those are exactly the days to come; the feria page has the timetable. If you want the monument, come the day before or after. The Saturday market is a reason to pick a Saturday in any month.

Insider tip

Public holidays that are not festival days, 1 May for instance, are open and quieter than you would expect because the French are elsewhere. The only fixed closures are 1 January, 1 November and 25 December.
